Marco Rubio Embarks on First International Tour as Secretary of State, Visiting Central American and Caribbean Nations

Marco Rubio, the Cuban-American recently confirmed as Secretary of State, is set to embark on his inaugural international tour representing U.S. diplomacy. His itinerary includes visits to Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. The journey kicks off this Saturday in Panama, amidst heightened tensions following Donald Trump's threats to reclaim control over the Panama Canal. Protests erupted in Panama today in opposition to the U.S. official's visit.

This trip signals the commencement of Rubio's tenure at the Department of State under the Trump administration, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations with Latin American and Caribbean nations. Rubio's agenda focuses on fostering cooperation on critical issues such as migration, economic growth, and regional security. "I am preparing for my first international trip. Unfortunately, our hemisphere has been neglected for years. Many of our regional allies felt they were better off as our adversaries than allies; that is no longer the case. Our country's leadership is back, and we stand with our regional partners," Rubio stated in a message posted on X.

In a conciliatory tone, he remarked, "This is the region we live in, it's our home, and our future prosperity largely depends on it. There are numerous opportunities for joint collaboration. Our bilateral priorities can help end the era of massive illegal migration, achieve economic growth, and bolster both stability and regional security," he emphasized.

Rubio's visit is part of a new U.S. foreign policy strategy aimed at reestablishing the country's leadership in the region, where historically it has wielded significant influence. However, according to the new Secretary of State, this has been overlooked in recent years. The focus of Rubio's tour will address several priorities for the Trump administration, such as combating massive illegal migration, promoting regional economic growth, and enhancing security.

He highlighted that relations with these countries could contribute to strengthening regional stability, a crucial condition for tackling challenges that affect both the region and the United States. Rubio did not address Trump's statements about the Panama Canal, which the Panamanian government has strongly opposed.

Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, was unanimously confirmed in January as the new Secretary of State, becoming the first Hispanic to hold this position in U.S. history.
