The health of noted economist and former political prisoner Martha Beatriz Roque Cabello has significantly worsened, as reported on Friday by Berta Soler, leader of the Ladies in White. At 78 years old, Roque stands as a prominent figure in Cuba's opposition movement and is currently battling for her life in a Havana hospital.

Since the early hours of January 31st, her condition has been classified as critical. Although she remains conscious, she is restless and experiencing severe complications from diabetes, including critical kidney failure. According to the medical report shared by Soler, the dehydration she suffered upon admission was addressed with intravenous fluids, yet her condition remains precarious.

As the day progressed, her health further declined. A later update confirmed she is facing an imminent threat to her life due to pre-existing heart conditions and alarmingly low hemoglobin levels. Even with slight improvements in kidney function, her body is engaged in a relentless battle.

Notably, the presence of State Security agents at the hospital has been evident, a detail that underscores Roque's long-standing opposition to the Cuban regime.

The gravity of her situation has resonated beyond Cuba's borders. The United States Embassy in Cuba expressed solidarity through social media channels. "Our thoughts are with Martha Beatriz, her family, and friends. We wish a speedy recovery to this tireless human rights advocate in Cuba and International Woman of Courage," read the embassy's statement.

Martha Beatriz Roque was the sole woman imprisoned during the 2003 Black Spring, when the Cuban regime launched a harsh crackdown on 75 dissidents. Her life has been defined by steadfast beliefs and relentless advocacy for human rights, making her a symbol of resistance for many both within and outside of Cuba.
