Renowned Cuban actresses Jacqueline Arenal, Tahimí Alvariño, and Isabel Santos are set to collaborate on a new film directed by Carlos Barba. Titled "No te puedes morir" ("You Can't Die"), this short film will delve into the complexities of family life.
Barba shared with Cuballama that he is thrilled to have such immense talent in this project, despite its brief format. "Their connection with the storyline predicts a deep sensitivity behind the film, especially given the tough themes we aim to explore," he commented.
The director aims to conclude his Fictional Filial Trilogy with this film, which began with "25 Horas" and was followed by "Las Polacas." The latter received the Special Coral Jury Prize at the 42nd International Festival of New Latin American Cinema. Barba also penned the screenplay, which portrays "the story of closely-knit women silently yearning to express fragments of their lives."
"Each character carries an unfulfilled desire and a challenging stigma, and I am confident they will convey this effectively," Barba noted. Filming is slated for the first half of the year in Havana, with a brief scene shot in Los Angeles, where the filmmaker resides.
"We've already started the initial creative discussions remotely," Barba explained, describing the process as one that develops "slowly and is thoroughly savored." In addition, Barba is anticipating the release of a documentary tribute marking the 35th anniversary of the beloved film "Adorables mentiras" and a music video featuring singer Liuba María Hevia.
