Cuban entertainer Niurka Marcos found herself in a contentious encounter with a police officer in Mérida, Yucatán, after being cited for not wearing a seatbelt while seated in the passenger seat. The tense exchange was captured on video, which the performer shared on her Instagram stories, sparking a heated debate online.
In the footage, Niurka voiced her disagreement with the officer's actions, expressing her frustration: “This character just stopped me to say he's going to give me a ticket because I'm not wearing a seatbelt. I've lived in Mérida, Yucatán, for four years, greeted by all the officers here, and none have ever said they'd fine me while I'm a passenger,” the actress stated.
The confrontation didn't end there. Niurka challenged the officer, pointing out that his colleagues had never reprimanded her for the same issue: “Your colleagues have never called me out, and you should know that,” she told the officer, clearly expressing her dissatisfaction.
In a more direct tone, Niurka insinuated that the officer might have ulterior motives: “This one surely wanted a bribe or something, and I don’t play that game. There's foolish people everywhere,” she concluded while remaining in the vehicle.
The incident quickly went viral, dividing opinions among viewers. While some supported the artist and labeled the officer’s actions as overzealous, others emphasized the importance of adhering to seatbelt laws, regardless of one's position in the car.
The video has also prompted discussions about the behavior of certain celebrities and their interactions with law enforcement, as well as the public's perception of road safety in the region.
As of now, Niurka has not released further statements about the incident, though her defiant stance and shared video have bolstered her image as an outspoken and controversial figure in Latin American entertainment.
