The Cuban intellectual, Alina Bárbara López Hernández, recently shared insights on her Facebook page about her interactions with international diplomats, emphasizing the crucial role of respectful dialogue in resolving conflicts. She disclosed that over the past two days, she engaged in discussions with representatives from the European Union and the United States.

On Friday, López Hernández met with Pelayo Castro Zuzuárregui, Deputy Director General for the Americas at the European External Action Service (EEAS), and Pablo Benítez from the EU Delegation in Cuba. The following day, she welcomed Mike Hammer, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in Cuba, along with his wife and other officials, into her home.

López Hernández noted that these interactions were marked by "respect, listening skills, and sensitivity" towards the complex issues facing the nation, particularly concerning political prisoners. "I have always believed in the power of respectful dialogue among people of all political and ideological stripes, whether they are fellow citizens or individuals from other countries," she stated.

The scholar highlighted that these discussions underscore how dialogue can be a potent mechanism for tackling social and political challenges without resorting to violence. Her message underscores the importance of building bridges between various stakeholders in a climate fraught with both internal and external tensions.

These meetings occur amidst growing international scrutiny regarding human rights conditions in Cuba and the plight of political prisoners on the island. Since arriving in Cuba, Hammer has engaged with numerous figures from the opposition and Cuban civil society.

In December 2024, he met with Berta Soler, leader of the Ladies in White, and economist and dissident Martha Beatriz Roque on Human Rights Day. This meeting focused on the situation of political prisoners and fundamental freedoms in Cuba.

Earlier in January, Hammer visited Leticia Ramos, a leader of the Ladies in White in Matanzas. Additionally, after his recent release, opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer had a discussion with Hammer about Cuba's lack of democracy and human rights violations. Ferrer expressed hope for a future where the two nations can forge closer political and economic ties grounded in mutual respect.
