The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the medical field marks a groundbreaking shift, with expectations that the first clinical trials of AI-developed drugs could begin within a year. Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Demis Hassabis, highlighted the transformative potential of AI in revolutionizing treatments for a wide range of diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative conditions, and cardiovascular issues.
In October, Hassabis, alongside two fellow researchers, was awarded the Nobel Prize for developing AlphaFold AI, an AI tool that predicts the three-dimensional structures of proteins. He illustrated how this innovation could benefit millions globally, by referencing the role of misfolded beta-amyloid proteins in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. These proteins can cluster around neurons, leading to their destruction.
"AlphaFold can predict the correct structure and possibly identify what's wrong when things go awry. Once the 3D structure of a protein is known, it's feasible to design pharmaceutical compounds—chemical entities that bind to the correct part of the protein," Hassabis explained during the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos.
Hassabis further elaborated that typically, proteins are sequenced genetically in a linear chain. The challenge lies in visualizing them in three dimensions (3D), as the 3D structure reveals the protein's function and interactions. "A protein can assume countless spatial configurations, and this is where AI steps in to perform an intelligent search," Hassabis mentioned.
In the human body, proteins correctly fold in a minimal amount of time to perform their designated functions. "We can replicate this natural process using AI and AlphaFold," the scientist emphasized, as reported by EFE.
