Five Lives Lost, Including a Child, in a Devastating Mayarí Tour Crash

A devastating road accident in the early hours of Sunday in the Castillito area of Mayarí, Holguín province, resulted in the tragic loss of five lives, including a child, and left another individual in critical condition. This was reported by journalist Emilio Rodríguez Pupo. Among the deceased, three were residents of the United States, visiting Cuba at the time.

The tragic event occurred around 1:00 a.m. on January 26th, when a tourist rental car, traveling from Holguín city to Moa with six passengers, lost control while crossing the Castillito bridge and collided with a large metal pipe. Activist Irma Broek shared images showing the car overturned.

The victims have been identified as: Yancarlos Jiménez Carmenate, a 12-year-old boy from the United States; Daniuska Carmenate Galván, 43, from the United States; Adriel Jiménez Pelegrín, 37, from the United States; Rachel Pelegrín González, 77, from Las Coloradas, Moa; and Yaddelis Pérez Osorio, 37, from Las Coloradas, Moa. In addition to the deceased, Yannelis Pérez Osorio, 33, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Holguín's main municipality. Her condition is critical and requires specialized care, as confirmed by Yunelvis Rodríguez Estrada, head of nursing at the Mayarí Hospital.

Local authorities in Moa and Mayarí have increased their efforts to address the aftermath of this heart-wrenching incident, including transporting the bodies to Moa, as noted by journalist Emilio Rodríguez Pupo. As of the latest update, no further details about the fatal crash are available. Unfortunately, this was not the only accident in Mayarí on that Sunday. Another road mishap, also reported by Rodríguez Pupo, involved a vehicle from the Moa port, which overturned when the driver veered off the road trying to avoid a cyclist.
