Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugás recently shared with his followers that he had a phone conversation with opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer, who was recently released from prison by the regime after more than three years. Ugás expressed his amazement and excitement upon hearing Ferrer's opinion of him, whom he regards as "Cuba's bravest man."
"It was incredible to speak with and especially hear the opinion of the bravest man in Cuba regarding me. He expressed his desire to have a public conversation with me, to which I enthusiastically agreed. It will be an honor, and I feel deeply honored," Ugás declared.
Ugás, a vocal critic of the Cuban dictatorship from his exile in Miami, also spoke with Luis Enrique Ferrer, José Daniel's brother, whom he has known since 2012. This week, the boxer reminisced about how in 2014, he had distanced himself from boxing and reached out to Luis Enrique for help securing a job with the Cuban American National Foundation to assist the opposition within Cuba, though it ultimately did not materialize.
Upon sharing this story on social media, Luis Enrique contacted him, expressing regret for not being able to assist at that time. "I told him quite the opposite. It was a blessing. Had he gotten me a stable job earning $2000-$2500 at the Cuban American Foundation doing something I am passionate about concerning Cuba, I might never have returned to boxing," Ugás explained on his Facebook wall.
Ugás, persistently critical of the Castro regime from Miami's exile community, shared this narrative to highlight that his political activism has deep roots. When he first met Luis Enrique Ferrer, the latter recounted the entire story of the Black Spring, during which he and his brother were sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison.
After enduring a challenging period that spanned several years, Ugás returned to his sports career and achieved success. "I wouldn't change how things unfolded, despite the hardships. If you read this story, know that my activism isn't something new; it's been there from day one," he emphasized.
