Saturday, January 25, 2025 by Claire Jimenez

At least 27 Cuban students impacted by a gas leak at the José Luis Dubrocq Pre-University Institute in Matanzas have been discharged from the hospital as of Friday, while eight remain hospitalized, according to a Facebook post from the Provincial Government. The latest update from the Provincial Pediatric Hospital "Eliseo Noel Caamaño" confirms that 27 students have been released, with the remaining eight expected to be discharged tomorrow, as cited by local authorities.

The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Friday when several tenth-grade students at José Luis Dubrocq began exhibiting symptoms of intoxication following the inhalation of an unidentified gas. The affected students, aged between 15 and 18, experienced dizziness, breathing difficulties, and skin redness, prompting a swift evacuation of the educational facility.

A total of 35 students were admitted to "Eliseo Noel Caamaño," where they received medical attention and were monitored for several hours. According to the regime, it was confirmed there that none of the students were in life-threatening condition.

The report states that "a commission is present at the center to investigate the causes of this incident," adding that "as a precaution, the educational process has been postponed until Saturday, the day the center hosts other educational activities."

Some students reported that the smell might have originated from a substance similar to acrylic, which rapidly spread throughout the building. In response to the official post, several Cuban internet users demanded an explanation for the incident and insisted that the reports not be concealed "as always happens," they claim.

Just two weeks ago, at least nine recruits aged 18 and 19 undergoing Military Service in Holguín lost their lives following an explosion in an ammunition warehouse, with neither a report on the incident being released nor any entity accepting responsibility for the tragedy.
