Following a severe traffic accident last Monday on the road from Morón to Turiguanó in Ciego de Ávila, two women remain in critical condition. The tragic event resulted in seven fatalities. The injured women are currently receiving care in the intensive care unit at the Provincial Hospital Capitán Roberto Rodríguez Fernández in Morón.
Dr. Youslierdys Manuel Ávila Companioni, a specialist in Intensive Medicine, informed the Cuban News Agency that both women are stable, with normal blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, and urine output. One patient suffered a frontal bone fracture requiring the removal of a bone fragment, while the other is dealing with more severe injuries, including widespread zonal damage, a fractured skull, a traumatic amputation of the right foot, and an open fracture of the left leg with femur breakage.
The specialist noted that both women are on artificial ventilation, which poses additional risks due to intubation and the use of Levin-type nasogastric tubes. However, their progress appears favorable, and they will undergo radiological exams for further evaluation.
Meanwhile, seven other injured individuals are being treated in the Neurosurgery ward for moderate injuries, including extensive scalp wounds, some extending to the face, and mild skull and mid-base fractures. All are conscious and under observation, experiencing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and mild to moderate muscle pain. Fortunately, none have severe cranial trauma.
On Tuesday, one patient was discharged after recovering from a cervical sprain and mild cranial trauma.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday when two buses transporting workers to Cayo Coco and Guillermo collided on the Cayo Coco highway. The crash happened in conditions of low visibility due to thick fog in the area.
An official investigation revealed that the accident was caused by the driver of the Yutong bus from the capital municipality. Captain Norge Pérez Fraga, deputy chief of Police Investigation in the province, stated that the vehicle "obstructed the path of the Transmetro bus traveling in the opposite direction amid dense fog, severely impairing visibility."
On Thursday, a Cuban citizen paid a heartfelt tribute using artificial intelligence to honor the drivers involved in the tragic accident, both of whom perished. The video shows Yuniester Oliva Artiles and Yohelvis Reino Veitía, the two drivers, greeting each other warmly with an embrace.
Initially, the accident resulted in six deaths—four at the scene and two at the hospital—with 59 injured. Sadly, the death toll has since risen to seven, following the passing of a 34-year-old worker from the Playa Coco hotel.
In response to the accident, many people rushed to donate blood at the local blood bank following an appeal from the authorities.
