Cubans Use Artificial Intelligence to Honor Fallen Drivers in Ciego de Ávila

Thursday, January 23, 2025 by Ethan Navarro

A unique and heartfelt tribute using artificial intelligence has been created by a Cuban to commemorate the drivers who perished on Monday in a tragic road accident. This incident took place on the highway linking Morón to Turiguanó in Ciego de Ávila, resulting in seven fatalities. The video features Yuniester Oliva Artiles and Yohelvis Reino Veitía, the drivers of the two buses involved, sharing a warm greeting and embrace.

The tribute was crafted by Ramsel Álvarez, a bus driver from Havana. Deeply moved by the news, Álvarez wanted to express his condolences to the grieving families through this medium. "I made this tribute because they are from the same province and are out on the roads daily. How many times did they cross paths? They knew every inch of that road, but fate had other plans for them. In the embrace (what you can't hear), they greet each other with respect," he shared on the Facebook group "ACCIDENTES BUSES & CAMIONES por más experiencia y menos víctimas!"

Pedro Domínguez, the group's moderator, expressed that the video deeply touched him. "Working in similar routes and both being bus drivers, I have no doubt that in life they shared countless hugs like this one. Rest in peace to both, it's tragic that life brought these two brothers and colleagues together in this way," he said.

A Tragic Outcome

In another post, Eridan González Velázquez, a doctor at Morón hospital, confirmed that the two drivers were close friends. "Their fatal outcome is very sad, indeed. It's also heartbreaking to know that more people died and many others were injured. A true tragedy," he remarked.

During the early hours of Monday, two buses carrying workers from Cayo Coco and Guillermo collided on the Cayo Coco road in Ciego de Ávila. The crash occurred under seemingly poor visibility conditions due to thick fog blanketing the area.

Official Investigation and Aftermath

The official investigation determined that the crash was caused by the driver of the Yutong bus from the main municipality. Captain Norge Pérez Fraga, deputy chief of Police Instruction in the province, explained that the vehicle "interrupted the path of the Transmetro bus traveling in the opposite direction amid heavy fog that impaired visibility."

Photos shared on social media depict one of the buses as being completely wrecked at the front, while the other sustained significant damage.

The initial death toll was six (four at the scene and two in the hospital), later rising to seven following the death of a 34-year-old worker from the Playa Coco hotel. In response to the tragedy, many people flocked to the blood bank to donate, heeding the call from authorities.
