New Supermarket in Havana Accepts Local Currency: "It Feels Like Another Country"

Sunday, January 26, 2025 by Zoe Salinas

The Cuban blogger Víctor González (@victoriny_) recently explored a newly opened supermarket in Havana where goods are sold in the national currency, yet at costs far beyond what an average worker can afford. Known as "Punto Fresco," this establishment is located on Avenida del Puerto and Ensenada de Atarés. Its open design integrates shopping areas with dining spaces, allowing customers to enjoy a slice of pizza or a cup of coffee.

Purchases made in the store are tracked on a magnetic card specific to the establishment but are paid for separately from the supermarket items. Payment is made upon exiting the premises. González highlighted the supermarket's prices, which are striking to many. A 500 ml bottle of water is priced at 140 pesos, sunflower oil costs 750 CUP, and a pack of sweet cookies is 760 pesos. The store also features sections for meats, dairy, and seafood, offering a variety of products that remain out of reach for many Cubans financially.

The blogger was astonished to find Starbucks products available in Cuba, although he did not specify the prices of these diverse coffees.

Other Supermarkets in Havana

On December 30, 2024, the Cuban government inaugurated a market in Havana that allows transactions in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC). This market is managed by the Spanish group VIMA and is situated at the intersection of Infanta and Santa Marta streets in the Centro Habana district. Not long before this, the regime launched a controversial market at 3rd and 70th in the Playa municipality, where only cash dollars or cards linked to foreign currency accounts are accepted.
