Strong Waves Flood Low-Lying Areas of Vedado in Havana

Wednesday, January 22, 2025 by Aaron Delgado

The iconic Havana Malecón has once again fallen victim to severe waves, this time as a result of the sixth cold front of the winter season, leading to flooding in the low-lying regions of Vedado. The intense swells, driven by strong northern winds, have significantly impacted the Malecón, with seawater spilling over the promenade and reaching nearby streets, as shown in videos shared by state journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso.

The Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) reported that the cold front, positioned over Matanzas at 2:00 p.m., brought with it rain, thunderstorms, and powerful winds, with gusts peaking at 60 km/h recorded at various weather stations across the region.

During the early hours, heavy rains primarily affected the Pinar del Río province, with Santa Lucía experiencing up to 10.4 millimeters of rainfall. As the day progressed, the cold front continued its slow march eastward, spreading winter-like conditions throughout the region.

Weather and Ocean Conditions Across Cuba

In western Cuba, temperatures have ranged from 19 to 22°C, while the rest of the country has seen temperatures soar above 30°C. Alongside the rain and strong winds, INSMET has issued warnings about the ongoing swells along the northern coast, which could continue impacting coastal areas like Vedado.

By morning, wind gusts of up to 59 km/h were recorded in Bahía Honda, Artemisa, and 60 km/h at the Casablanca station in Havana. As the front weakens and stalls over the west, a decrease in both precipitation and wave intensity is anticipated, though the sea and northern coast conditions will remain hazardous in the coming hours.
