Marrero Challenges U.S.: "They Have the Weapons, But Lack the Will"

Wednesday, January 22, 2025 by Alex Smith

Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero declared that the Military Bastion Exercise at Cuban universities is intended to send a strong message to President Donald Trump's new administration. "It serves to convey a message to the U.S. government that, as we've always said, they are equipped with the most modern gear and weaponry, but they lack what we have in abundance: the willingness to fight and die to defend our homeland," Marrero stated.

The exercise involved students from the University of Information Sciences (UCI) and the Havana Technological University "José Antonio Echeverría" (Cujae). These students were trained by officers from the Cuban Armed Forces to handle combat weapons.

Marrero noted that "from today until January 24, the Strategic Exercise Bastion 2024 will be conducted across Cuba to boost the country's defense readiness and the preparation of troops and the population to face various enemy actions," as he mentioned on X.

Since Donald Trump took office on Monday, the Cuban regime's activities on social media have focused on showcasing a supposed military readiness to confront what they refer to as imperialism, according to statements by Miguel Díaz-Canel. Images released show students wielding Russian AK-47 rifles and throwing grenades.

"As long as imperialism exists, the Party, the State, and the People will give maximum attention to defense services. This is an unbreakable principle," the head of state wrote on X.

The Bastion Exercise comes at a time of increasing opposition to mandatory military service in Cuba, following the deaths of nine teenagers allegedly due to mishandling old weaponry at a military unit. This incident sparked criticism of the state for inadequate safety conditions and the compulsory enlistment of young people as early as 16 into the ranks of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).

One of the first executive orders signed by Donald Trump was to reverse the decision made by the Joe Biden administration to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. This prompted an immediate response from Miguel Díaz-Canel, who accused Trump of acting with "arrogance" and fostering a "cruel economic war" against the island.
