Weather expert Raydel Ruisanchez issued a warning about the presence of fog and mist across much of Cuba on Wednesday morning, with a notable impact in interior regions. This hydrometeorological phenomenon significantly diminishes visibility, prompting a strong recommendation for drivers to exercise extreme caution to prevent traffic accidents.
"On Wednesday morning, conditions are favorable for the formation of fog and mist in much of Cuba, particularly in interior areas. As we know, this hydrometeorological phenomenon greatly reduces visibility, so we advise drivers to be very cautious," Ruisanchez cautioned on his social media platforms.
The warning comes just two days after a tragic accident in Ciego de Ávila, where dense fog led to a collision between two buses on the road connecting Morón with Turiguanó Island. The crash resulted in six fatalities and 59 injuries, with the injured receiving medical care at Morón hospital.
According to traffic authorities, human error was identified as the primary cause of the accident, which occurred under low visibility conditions due to the fog. Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, Minister of Transportation, expressed condolences to the affected families and emphasized the need to enhance road safety measures in the country.
"It is a profoundly painful event, as lives are lost due to something that shouldn't have happened," Rodríguez Dávila stated during a meeting of the National Road Safety Commission. The meeting addressed the main causes of accidents in Cuba, which regime authorities attribute to lack of attention to vehicle control, disregard for the right of way, and speeding.
The recent accident has heightened public concern and underscores the urgency of adopting additional precautions under adverse weather conditions, such as fog. The community of Morón has shown solidarity by donating blood en masse for the injured. Drivers are urged to use low-beam headlights, maintain a safe distance, and reduce speed when encountering fog on the road.
