Monday, January 20, 2025 by Sophia Martinez

Cuban actor Luis Alberto García recently took to Facebook to reminisce about the last cinematic endeavor of the legendary Mario Limonta, an iconic figure in Cuban arts who passed away in Havana just one day shy of his 89th birthday. García highlighted that Limonta's final starring role was in a feature film yet to be released, marking the end of his illustrious career.

"In the retrospective of Mario Limonta's artistic life and his contributions to national cinema presented on NTV, they seemingly overlooked (perhaps unintentionally?) his ultimate contribution—his last lead role in a Cuban film was in 'Estrés,' a deeply Cuban feature directed by Marilyn Solaya," shared García. "Soon, our compatriots both within the archipelago and abroad, as well as audiences from other regions, will witness the work of this remarkable actor at 90 years old, even while in frail health," García added.

The actor expressed bewilderment over what he described as "omissions" in the official coverage of Limonta's life and work. In a heartfelt message following Limonta's passing, García revealed, "I cherished playing your son in that film, a gentleman of eternal smiles."

The Legacy of Mario Limonta

In response to García's post, fellow actor Héctor Noas joined in applauding "Estrés" and Limonta, emphasizing the film's significance and the necessity for the Cuban public to experience it. "Estrés is a serious film, crafted with love and respect for all Cubans. We hope to present it to the public this year. It could be a major success for Cuban cinema right now," Noas commented.

Mario Limonta left an indelible mark on Cuban culture through his work in film, television, radio, and theater. Born in Guantánamo in 1936, he began his artistic journey as a declaimer on local radio before moving to Havana in 1955, abandoning his law studies to fully commit to the arts.

Throughout his career, Limonta brought to life unforgettable characters such as "Sargento Arencibia" in San Nicolás del Peladero and Sandalio "El Bolao" in the popular radio show Alegrías de Sobremesa, alongside his late wife, Aurora Basnuevo. In cinema, he shone in films like De cierta manera, El Brigadista, and Barrio Cuba. His exceptional talent earned him numerous accolades, including the National Television Award and the Distinction for National Culture.

Mario Limonta passed away on Saturday in intensive care after an emergency hospitalization, leaving an irreplaceable void in Cuban arts. His funeral services are scheduled for this Tuesday, as confirmed by his family. Limonta’s last performance in "Estrés" promises to be a poignant testament to his dedication and talent, even amidst life's most challenging times.
