A Latino's Heartbreaking Story of Depression in the US

Monday, January 20, 2025 by Henry Cruz

"The United States is a cold country. It's not just the weather; it's the people. Everything here revolves around work, leaving you utterly alone." With this stark statement, a Latino immigrant encapsulated the emotional toll of living in a nation that, for many, symbolizes the promise of a better life.

After spending nine months in the US, this man, known on TikTok as El Loco Jonder (@ellocojonder), shared his experience in a video that quickly went viral. From the isolation and lack of friendships to the battle with anxiety and depression, his story has struck a chord with thousands who, like him, chose to emigrate.

"I had never felt this in my life. Anxiety, depression... this country emotionally destroys you," he admitted in his reflection, which has already garnered millions of views. He also warned about the dangers of arriving without a strong mindset or clear plans: "Yes, you can earn money, but without vision, this place consumes you."

One of the most difficult aspects of his account was about personal relationships. "98% of couples who come here end up separating. It's very hard to maintain a relationship with so many challenges and sacrifices," he asserted. His voice even trembled as he spoke about how he has changed emotionally since arriving: "Nowadays, my feelings are always on edge. I've never felt so vulnerable."

The video, posted just days ago, has sparked a wave of reactions, with over 27,000 comments. Some users identified with his words: "I also discovered depression after emigrating"; "This country is not for everyone, it destroys you if you lack strength." Others defended the immigrant experience: "The US offers security and stability, but it's not for everyone."

Among those who supported him, several encouraged him not to give up: "You're strong for sharing this. Keep going, you've come this far," while some expressed their sympathy from abroad: "I never thought it would be this hard. Now I question whether it's worth coming."

El Loco Jonder concluded his message with a thought for those still contemplating the leap: "The cost of pursuing your dreams is very high. But since we're here, we must make it worthwhile."
