A coordinated effort by multiple law enforcement agencies led to the arrest of nearly 30 individuals in Coral Gables on Friday, January 19. This operation was part of an investigation into a potential case of human trafficking or smuggling. Among those detained was a Cuban national, apprehended alongside several others of various nationalities, according to a report by NBC Miami.
The operation kicked off at 9:30 a.m. when a security guard, part of a local neighborhood association, reported what appeared to be an ongoing abduction on Old Cutler Road. The security personnel noticed two suspicious vehicles: a U-Haul truck and a Toyota, both of which were initially interpreted by authorities as being involved in a possible kidnapping.
Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak stated that 23 individuals were discovered in the U-Haul truck, including 6 women and 15 men from China, as well as a Cuban man and an Ecuadorian woman. The Toyota contained two Cuban men, a Brazilian woman, and two men from Ecuador. Initial figures varied, but it was confirmed that over 30 people were involved in the operation.
In addition to the Coral Gables Police, the operation included the participation of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Homeland Security officers. Maritime patrols were also part of the operation, as it is suspected that the group was transported by sea to south Coral Gables before being moved into the truck.
Hudak explained that those arrested might be part of a human smuggling network, helping migrants illegally reach the United States. Authorities are also investigating whether this was a case of human trafficking, where the victims might face labor exploitation or be coerced into criminal activities once in the country.
The police chief highlighted that the case started as a response to an abduction in progress, prompting a swift mobilization of security forces. "As police, when we hear that type of call, we act immediately," Hudak stated. "It was a joint effort, and all officers from south Coral Gables rushed to the scene as quickly as possible," he emphasized.
All the detainees were placed under federal custody after rescue teams confirmed they had no serious injuries.
