A man involved in the theft of essential food items from a ration store in the Union de Reyes municipality of Matanzas has been apprehended by the police. This Wednesday, a post on the Facebook page "Con Todos la Victoria," which is affiliated with the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), revealed that law enforcement officials recovered stolen goods from Juan Norge Leyva Suárez's home in the La Esperanza community. These items, taken from the La Estrella store in the Cabezas Popular Council, were intended for distribution to local residents through the ration book system.

The stolen items, taken in recent days, included three bags of rice, a bag of sugar, 392 coffee packages, and an unspecified amount of bath soap and toothpaste. The report described the crime as one marked by irresponsibility, dehumanization, and insensitivity due to the harm it causes to fellow citizens and the state, leading to widespread public disapproval.

While Leyva remains in custody, authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. Thefts from ration stores have surged across the country, correlating with a rise in criminal activity and insecurity. Such incidents result in significant losses and deprive many families of basic necessities.

In recent months, numerous thefts of rationed goods have been reported in various provinces. In late December, three individuals were apprehended for stealing goods intended for the ration book system in the Pedro Betancourt municipality, Matanzas. Additionally, three others involved in the theft from a store in the Rampa Popular Council of Havana were arrested in November.

During the first half of 2024, a total of 48 thefts were reported in ration stores across Las Tunas province, primarily in the main municipality and Puerto Padre, with a notable increase in July and August.

The ration book system in Cuba, which has provided essential items like rice, sugar, oil, and coffee to families for decades, is facing mounting challenges due to the country's severe economic crisis. The shortage of foreign currency has limited the government's ability to import food, and declining domestic production has increased reliance on imports.

These issues have led to frequent delays and shortages in the distribution of essential goods, significantly impacting the lives of Cubans.
