Luis Robles Elizástigui, often referred to as "the young man with the sign," has been released on parole this Thursday after serving part of a five-year sentence for peacefully protesting on the Boulevard of San Rafael in Havana. His release was confirmed by the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights (OCDH) on the social media platform X, coinciding with the Cuban government's announcement to free 553 inmates as part of negotiations with the Vatican and the United States Government.

The OCDH communicated with Robles' mother, who stated that the political prisoner's family was en route home. Fabio Corchado Borroto noted on Facebook that Robles was released on parole but must adhere to stringent mobility restrictions. Cuban activist Yamilka Lafita, known on social media as Lara Crofs, shared on Facebook, "Luis Robles Elizástigui has been released after nearly five years in detention." She highlighted that Robles is the first political prisoner to be freed before the protests of July 11.

According to his mother, Yindra Elizástigui Jardines, Robles was transferred to the La Lima correctional labor camp in Guanabacoa on June 3, 2024. Earlier, he had been held at a camp known as El 18, near El Pitirre prison, where authorities denied him parole access. Originating from Guantánamo, Robles was sentenced to five years for displaying a sign demanding an end to repression and the release of political prisoners in Havana.

Background of Luis Robles' Imprisonment

Robles faced charges of "enemy propaganda" and "disobedience," which human rights advocates argue lack foundation. Initially, he was held in the maximum-security Combinado del Este prison. His family’s persistent appeals led to his transfer to a minimum-security regime, with stays at facilities like Zona Cero and El 18 before ultimately being moved to La Lima.

In October, Elizástigui reported that the State Security threatened her son in jail due to her public demands on social media for his release. She revealed that a political police officer visited the La Lima correctional labor camp, where Robles was detained, warning that her actions could result in repercussions for him. Despite being eligible for parole since April, Cuban authorities denied Robles' parole request in May 2024.
