Road Between Granma and Santiago Remains Closed Due to Landslides Triggered by Earthquake

Friday, December 27, 2024 by Henry Cruz

The highway linking the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba remains impassable following landslides caused by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck the early hours of December 23 in the Guamá municipality.

As reported by Canal Caribe, a coordinated effort by directors, workers, and technicians from various organizations, including Housing, the Provincial Road Center, EPAC, Emproy 15, and the National Seismological Research Service (SENAIS), is underway to assess the damage and provide immediate solutions.

At the El Babujal crossing, part of the Uvero Popular Council, Emproy 15 personnel have been diligently working to clear the route, which has left communities like La Plata, La Magdalena, and the province of Granma isolated. Initial efforts involved removing massive boulders, some weighing up to four tons, that were completely obstructing the road.

In addition to clearing operations, experts emphasize the necessity for maintaining a comprehensive record of these incidents to inform future studies and enhance road safety in this landslide-prone region.

Geological Vulnerability Confirmed

The hazardous areas had been previously identified in geological surveys, and the earthquake confirmed the region's susceptibility, causing massive rockslides that pose significant risks to vehicles and pedestrians. The seismic event, centered 35 kilometers southwest of Chivirico, led to landslides and the fall of large rocks in the Babujal area, obstructing the route connecting the Ocujal del Turquino and Uvero councils.

The earthquake also inflicted damage on homes and state buildings, with reports of cracks in walls and structures prompting authorities to enforce protective measures. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported.

Since the main quake, over 300 aftershocks have occurred, with seven being felt by residents, keeping affected communities on high alert.
