The trial concerning the tragic murder of Rafael Montero Llópiz, a young man who was fatally stabbed last March, took place on Wednesday in San Luis, a municipality in Santiago de Cuba. The proceedings have been marred by allegations of bias intended to favor the accused.

Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported on Facebook that the perpetrator's brother appeared at the trial carrying the knives used in the crime and was allegedly involved in the incident. Nonetheless, he was only present as a witness for his sibling. In contrast, several potential witnesses for the victim were not allowed to testify.

Mayeta Labrada highlighted the brutality of Rafael's murder, noting that he suffered over 20 stab wounds. Family members attending the trial recounted that the defense attorneys argued that more violent incidents have occurred in San Luis, asserting that the 28-year sentence being requested is disproportionate. The defense lawyer attempted to downplay the seriousness of the crime by suggesting that the victim remained at the scene "by choice."

The court is set to announce the verdict on January 21. "There is widespread belief that the trial was rigged, and the sentence may be reduced to less than 20 years, leaving the grieving family without justice," Mayeta remarked.

He added, "It's unfathomable that a human life could be valued less than that of a horse, and that a murderer might serve less time than a thief or someone punished for speaking out against the regime in public."

Rafael Montero Llópiz, a 29-year-old father residing in San Luis, Santiago de Cuba, was fatally stabbed on a Thursday during an altercation. He was the father of a three-year-old child.

According to Mayeta, at the time of the incident, Rafael was drinking with others in the La Granja neighborhood when a dispute arose with a local youth. Suddenly, the brother of the person in the argument arrived and stabbed Rafael twice in the back. Following the attack, the assailant surrendered to the police.
