Cuban actor Raúl Enríquez Zerquera has openly criticized the ongoing economic and social decline in Cuba, urging the country's leaders to communicate with honesty to the people. Last Friday, he expressed his concerns on Facebook after listening to speeches from the IX Plenary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.

Enríquez, renowned for his roles in the soap opera "Cuando el amor no alcanza" and the police series "Tras la Huella", began his post with a plea for understanding, labeling the speeches as repetitive and out of touch with the everyday struggles faced by most Cubans.

The actor challenged the official claims of progress on the island, posing a stark question: “What advancements have we made? The perception we get is of constant regression.” He highlighted basic shortages affecting Cuban families, such as the disappearance of essentials like eggs, beans, chicken, coffee, milk for children, and sugar, along with the erratic supply of rice, ground meat, and luncheon meat.

Enríquez also pointed to the energy crisis, with daily deficits exceeding 1300 megawatts, as well as the collapse of public transportation and the shortage of essential medicines, despite their regulation and prescription requirements.

“Excessive prices mock every promise and rise without restraint,” Enríquez remarked, criticizing the lack of concrete action against the rampant inflation and scarcity. He directly appealed to Cuban leaders, urging them to be truthful to the people who elected them, emphasizing the necessity of transparency and integrity.

Moreover, he criticized the frequent invocation of patriotism in official rhetoric, arguing that the Cuban people have already proven their patriotism through enduring hardships. Enríquez questioned the absence of tangible progress amidst calls for “changes the people are desperately demanding," wondering when these changes will materialize, sarcastically asking, “When will pigs fly?”

In a poignant tone, he lamented, “Our nation has never been so impoverished and devastated,” citing the increasing number of individuals scavenging for food in trash bins and the growing presence of beggars in the streets of Havana. “This is a true reflection of our capital's state, a condition Fidel never allowed,” he concluded.

Enríquez's statements come at a time of profound economic and social turmoil in Cuba, characterized by uncontrolled inflation, shortages of basic goods, frequent power outages, and a worsening of public services. The actor's post echoes the sentiments of many Cubans who are seeking urgent answers and changes in the face of this critical situation.
