A Florida police officer of Cuban descent was tragically shot and killed during a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon in Charlotte County. Deputy Corporal Elio Díaz had pulled over a white pickup truck at a Chevron gas station near a resort in Port Charlotte, roughly 100 miles southeast of Tampa, around 3:00 p.m. The driver, a 24-year-old man, retrieved a rifle from the vehicle's cabin and opened fire.

Díaz was rushed to a hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell addressed the media later that evening. "A pursuit was initiated and deputies were able to locate the suspect not too far away. He was found at a Popeye's restaurant on Kings Highway. As deputies approached, he immediately brandished a rifle and one of the deputies fired a shot, striking him in the head," he recounted.

The shooter was identified as Andrew Mostyn, Jr. He was airlifted to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The sheriff did not specify the reason for the initial traffic stop.

Clearly moved, Sheriff Prummell urged the public to remember the fallen officer and his family, especially during this time of year. "Elio was a friend, a devoted family man who adored his children, and an outstanding officer... he will be sorely missed. Thank you," he said through tears.

Remembering Officer Elio Díaz

Officer Díaz began his law enforcement career in 2013. He was married and a father of four children, including young ones. The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, speaking to FOX4, detailed that Díaz served for a total of 11 years and three months, earning the rank of corporal in January 2020.

His roles included Highway Patrol, Investigations, STAR (Strategic Targeted Area Response), and the Crisis Negotiation Team. In December 2015, he was awarded the Law Enforcement Officer of the Month. He was also recognized twice as Member of the Quarter in 2023, during the first and third quarters. Sheriff Prummell posthumously promoted him to sergeant.

Colleagues described Díaz as a genuine and kind-hearted individual who had a deep passion for his work, only surpassed by his love for his family. "He had a personality that could light up any situation. Díaz loved to laugh and bring joy to others. He was well-known in the department for his homemade Cuban coffee. Whenever he brought some to the office, people would line up for a cup," the Sheriff's Office shared.

Moreover, Díaz participated annually in the "Shop With A Cop" event, allowing children from low-income families to purchase Christmas gifts. This year's event took place just a week before his untimely death.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed sorrow over the officer's tragic passing. "First Lady Casey DeSantis and I are praying for the family, friends, and colleagues of Corporal Díaz following his death. Florida honors and appreciates Corporal Díaz for his service to his community," he stated on social media platform X.

Senator Rick Scott also shared his condolences. "Devastated to hear about the death of a Charlotte County officer tonight. I have spoken with Charlotte County Sheriff Prummell to let him know that Ann and I are praying for his team and the officer's family tonight. Please keep them in your prayers," he wrote.

The incident led to multiple street closures for several hours.
