Commander Julio Camacho Aguilera, Historic Figure of Cuban Regime, Passes Away at 100

Julio Camacho Aguilera, a prominent Cuban military and political figure, has died at the age of 100, as confirmed by the government. Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz announced the news on X, extending sympathies to the family of what he described as an "exemplary fighter, dedicated entirely to the service of the Fatherland."

The president of the National Assembly, Esteban Lazo, also expressed his sorrow over the passing of the former Rebel Army Commander, who played a pivotal role in the popular uprising on September 5, 1957, in Cienfuegos. This event led to his union with the Rebel Army, where he earned his military rank.

Following the triumph of the so-called 1959 Revolution, Camacho Aguilera took on high-level responsibilities, including leading the Ministry of Transport from 1959 to 1961. He later served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party in Pinar del Río and held various positions in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and as ambassador to the Soviet Union.

Julio Camacho Aguilera was born on March 7, 1924, in the former Central "Santa Lucía," located in what is now the municipality of Rafael Freyre in the current Province of Holguín, Cuba. The regime awarded him numerous accolades throughout his career, such as an honorary doctorate in Political Science from the University of Pinar del Río in 2002. This was in recognition of his personal commitment to sustainable use of the protected area of the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, along with the National Environment Award in 2007.
