Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugás has openly declared his unwavering support for fellow compatriot Robeisy Ramírez, who has recently faced criticism following his defeat to Mexican fighter Rafael Espinoza. The two squared off on December 7 for the WBO featherweight title in a bout that ended controversially with a technical knockout in the sixth round. Ramírez, known as "El Tren," was forced to quit due to an eye injury.

In the wake of this incident, Ugás has issued multiple messages to the Cuban community, urging respect for Ramírez and calling for unity. "I respect you as a fan for demanding more, and you have every right to do so. But be fair. Most importantly, if you're Cuban, it looks bad to elevate fighters from other countries while belittling your own and fueling false narratives," Ugás stated on his social media.

Known for his achievements in professional boxing and for having faced renowned opponents like Manny Pacquiao, Ugás emphasized his pride in the sport he has dedicated his life to, which now tests boxers like Robeisy. "I've been hearing these false narratives that harm our boxing and our fighters for years. Boxing is the most nationalistic sport there is. You support and stand by your own, in good times, bad times, and everything in between. Once we understand that, we can become a great fanbase. I respect your complaint, I respect your opinion, but be fair," he concluded.

Ugás' statements highlight his disapproval of the destructive criticism that, in his view, damages both the athletes and the perception of Cuban boxing on the international stage. Previously, Ugás had praised Ramírez’s decision to halt the fight, prioritizing his health and professional future. "Live to fight another day," Ugás remarked on social media, underscoring the importance of protecting fighters' physical integrity. "Who knows what kind of injury he could have in that eye. He was winning, but that eye was going to close completely, and the injury would have worsened," he added.

On December 7 in Arizona, United States, Mexican boxer Espinoza retained his WBO featherweight title following Ramírez's withdrawal, who until then had been ahead on the judges' scorecards. After the match, the fighter from Cienfuegos attributed the issue to an alleged unpunished elbow from the referee: "It wasn't a punch, it was an elbow straight to the eye. It's impossible to continue under those conditions," he claimed.

For his part, Espinoza dismissed the allegations, stating, "I just did my job. I hit him clean, and I think he felt my power. This proves that I'm ready to become a legend in Mexican boxing."
