The Cuban government is actively pursuing the acquisition of Minsk engines from Belarus, a key military and economic partner of the Cuban regime. The state news agency of Belarus, BelTA, reported that Aleksandr Botvinnik, the CEO of the Minsk Engine Plant (trademarked as MMZ), held discussions with Santiago Pérez Benítez, the Cuban ambassador to Belarus.
Botvinnik provided an overview of the plant's production lines to the Cuban diplomat, highlighting the variety of diesel engines and specialized machinery they manufacture. Ambassador Pérez Benítez showed particular interest in the plant's capabilities and other products offered by the holding company, including pumping stations and irrigation equipment for agricultural use.
The Cuban official did not specify how Havana plans to finance these engines, merely stating that the cooperation between the two nations holds "strategic importance." He emphasized that Belarusian technologies and best practices in manufacturing could substantially boost Cuba's agricultural sector efficiency.
Minsk motorcycles have been produced since the aftermath of World War II and enjoy significant popularity in Cuba. Back in 2018, the MMZ engine plant agreed to enhance its collaboration with the island by sending a shipment of 84 D-242-71M engines. A delegation from the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture visited the factory to procure engines and parts necessary for the repair of tractors, trucks, and agricultural machinery.
The plant's director expressed readiness to dispatch specialists to Cuba, aiming to facilitate engine installation and refine all technical processes involved.
