A train collision early Saturday morning in Cuba's Sancti Spíritus province has led to a massive oil spill, impacting nearby homes and agricultural lands. The accident occurred when two trains collided at kilometer 349.0 of the Central Railway Line, between the stations of Guayos and Siguaney, resulting in one of the tanker cars overturning and releasing a substantial amount of oil.

In a photo shared on social media by Cuba's Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, the extent of the spill is visible as oil seeped into the backyards of several houses, coating the ground, fences, and surrounding farmland. The image shows the oil forming a slick, black layer around trees, posing a potential health risk to residents and causing significant environmental harm.

Environmental and Safety Concerns

Rodríguez Dávila noted that the affected tanker was transporting 60 tons of oil. The precise amount recoverable will be assessed once cleanup efforts, coordinated with state-run company Cupet, are completed. The minister also stated that environmental measures will be implemented to lessen the spill's impact.

Initial investigations suggest that the accident was due to non-compliance with railway operational regulations. A commission has been established to investigate the incident further and determine accountability. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries have been reported, and the damage to the railway tracks is reportedly minimal. However, the environmental consequences appear to be substantial.

Recurring Railway Incidents

This marks the second train-related fuel spill in Sancti Spíritus in 2024. Earlier in April, the derailment of the Extra Train 900, carrying crude oil to the Sergio Soto refinery in Cabaiguán, resulted in a spill of 200 to 250 liters, just five kilometers from the Zaza River. Initially, authorities claimed there was no oil spill or human casualties, though damage to the tracks and fuel tanks was reported.
