The recent passing of Maya Queen, the iconic persona brought to life by the gifted Juan Luis Prado Serrano from Matanzas, has deeply impacted Cuba's artistic and LGBTIQA+ community. Since childhood, Prado dreamed of theater and dance, dedicating over two decades to the art of drag, giving birth to Maya Queen—a figure renowned for her charm and spirit, as reported by the platform "Alas Tensas" on Facebook.

Prado often remarked, "Drag is a tribute to women," drawing inspiration from the artist Sadi and his mother, whom he regarded as a queen. He embarked on his drag journey at just 14 years old, facing prejudice and restrictions that initially forced him to perform in secret. Nevertheless, his unwavering resolve marked a pivotal moment in Cuban drag history, according to "Alas Tensas."

Maya Queen left an indelible mark on Cuba's cultural scene, earning accolades like "Best of the Year" (2007 and 2008), "Miss Temperament of the City" (2013), and Queen in the Miss Cuba International Gay (2017). Her talent illuminated stages such as Teatro El Portazo, El Dicho, Las Ruinas de Matasiete, and iconic Havana venues like El Amanecer and Las Vegas.

Beyond her artistry, Maya Queen will be remembered for her courage and as a beacon of perseverance and advocacy for LGBTIQA+ visibility: "In my neighborhood, not many know my name; however, everyone knows Maya," she proudly stated. Her passing leaves an irreplaceable void, yet her legacy transcends the stage and will continue to inspire future generations.

"Rest in peace. We will always remember you, Maya Queen, the great Queen of Temperament," noted the platform. Social media has been inundated with heartfelt tributes and condolences in recent hours.

Apostates Cuba shared on Facebook: "Maya Queen, an icon of performance and drag in Cuba, has passed away. Cuban theater and the LGBTIQA+ community are in mourning. Juan Luis Prado's illustrious career and relentless fight for LGBTIQA+ rights have left an indelible mark on our hearts. We will forever remember his talent, bravery, and commitment to our community."

"I wish I could return that smile to you. Today, Matanzas weeps, and the heavens open their gates to a star. It pains me so much not to have given you a kiss. Thank you for all the advice and for always supporting me. Today, I will raise my voice in your name. May God watch over and guide you; we will meet again," expressed Lucero Gc.

Meanwhile, Danna García commented on Facebook: "Rest in peace my beautiful love, my godfather, my mother, my everything; you will no longer be here every day, we won't have that coffee we loved so much, no more spectacular nights or dawns sewing the dresses you wore to shine like the star you are, you can't imagine how much I feel your loss."

Several drag artists have passed away in 2024, leaving behind much sorrow and grief. In July, Havana bid farewell to "Paloma Dietrich," a beloved Cuban drag performer with over 35 years in the entertainment industry. Known as "The Empress" and "The Great Lady," Dietrich succumbed to a kidney ailment she couldn't overcome.

Josh Bellakito, a young drag artist from Havana known on social media, passed away in May after a valiant battle with cancer, a fight he ultimately lost, as evidenced by the numerous messages of condolence.
