Cuban Family Provides Permanent Home for Foster Child

Saturday, November 30, 2024 by Ethan Navarro

Hendrix, an American boy who had been living in temporary foster care, has found a permanent home after being adopted by a Cuban family in South Florida. His story has gained attention as November marks National Adoption Month in the United States.

In 2022, at the age of 12, Hendrix expressed his hope of being adopted during an interview with NBC6, a television station affiliated with Telemundo. His heartfelt revelation set his path towards a new beginning. The feature was part of the “Forever Family” segment, filmed at his foster care home, showcasing the side of Hendrix that not everyone knew, as described by his current adoptive mother. It emphasized the significance of him having a family of his own.

When Yenedy Suárez, a Cuban therapist working with his group home, watched the segment, she immediately knew what to do. As a wife to Yusmel Triana and mother of two children—a teenager and a young boy—Suárez made a life-changing decision.

“We discussed it as a family, my husband, our daughter, and I, and decided to begin the adoption process. He was there in the group home, and I couldn’t just leave him behind,” she shared with Telemundo51.

Hendrix’s adoptive father, Triana, added, “He’s a new family member, and we’ve had to guide him. He didn’t know what family life was like, which was challenging, but we’ve worked through it, and he’s brought joy, especially to his brother.”

Hendrix sums up his feelings in four Spanish words: “Yo amo mi familia” (I love my family).

In a recent clip from the “Forever Family” initiative, a media project that has been connecting children with permanent homes since 2002, Hendrix is seen enjoying life with his new family—his parents, siblings, and Cuban grandparents. Photos and videos capture moments from the court when his adoption was finalized, to family trips, gatherings, and everyday experiences in his new home.

Hendrix shares a close bond with his younger brother, Noah, and his older sister, Natalie, who recently arrived from Cuba, as noted by Telemundo51. “He’s learned a lot from her,” the teenager acknowledged. Natalie added that language differences didn’t hinder their connection. “Neither of us spoke the other’s language, but now I speak English, and sometimes he speaks Spanish with me,” she revealed.

With tears of joy, Hendrix’s adoptive mother expressed, “I knew he had a big heart, that he was a good child. That’s why we decided to make him part of our family, because we knew we could help him achieve more than what society saw in him.”

“He is a very intelligent boy and just needs the right direction to become whatever he wants in the future,” Suárez concluded.
