Cuban-American Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar recently held discussions with financial mogul Elon Musk regarding the prospect of delivering unrestricted Internet access to Cuba. Musk, who owns Starlink, a company committed to providing affordable broadband Internet service, listened to the Republican politician's aspirations to bring connectivity to the Cuban people.
"It was fantastic to talk with Elon Musk this morning," Maria Elvira shared on her X account. "We have the technology; we just need the willpower. We can make it happen!" she emphasized.
Elon's Role in Government Efficiency
Musk was previously appointed by Trump to lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with transforming the state apparatus by cutting down bureaucracy and enhancing administrative efficiency.
Salazar's Longstanding Efforts for Cuban Internet Access
Ensuring Internet access in Cuba has been a priority for Salazar for several years. In 2022, she urged the billionaire to deploy his satellite Internet technology in Cuba, similar to his actions in Ukraine following the Russian invasion. "I thank Mr. Musk for his technological support to Ukraine and would love for him to do the same for Cuba," she expressed at that time.
Months later, Musk hinted at the possibility of extending his Internet service to Cuba when he succinctly replied "Ok" to a question posed on Twitter by a human rights advocate about whether Starlink could technically be made available to the Cuban populace.
Addressing Internet Censorship in Cuba
In 2021, following the regime's crackdown on the July 11th protests, Maria Elvira called for immediate assistance to provide the island's residents with uncensored Internet access. "The Cuban people need immediate, uncensored Internet to connect with fellow Cubans and the world. We must help them expose the brutality of the communist regime and bring an end to communism in Cuba once and for all," she declared.
The Republican representative, who has just been re-elected for a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, asserted that Washington has the capacity to aid nations in resisting the grips of communism.
