In the aftermath of the powerful earthquakes measuring 6.0 and 6.7 that struck eastern Cuba on Sunday, authorities have documented more than 2,300 aftershocks. Among these, around 78 were likely noticeable to the population.
The latest report from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), covering the period from 6:00 am Tuesday to 5:59 am Wednesday, detailed 11 seismic events exceeding a magnitude of 3.0. Notably, 10 of these were centered within 40 km of Pilón municipality in the Granma province.
Seismic Activity Concentrated in Pilón-Chivirico
Statistical data on seismic occurrences by region highlights that there have been 501 events ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 4.3 in the Pilón-Chivirico area, and a 3.1 magnitude quake near Paso de los Vientos Gran Inagua. This data underscores the significant seismic activity concentrated in these regions.
Eastern Cuba remains on high alert as aftershocks have persisted since the initial quakes on Sunday. By Tuesday morning, the National Seismological Service reported a total of 1,799 aftershocks, with 914 occurring in the last 24 hours in the Pilón-Chivirico zone.
Community Urged to Stay Informed and Prepared
Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, the first secretary of the Communist Party in Santiago de Cuba, emphasized the importance of vigilance, noting that of the 1,799 recorded aftershocks, 63 were potentially felt by residents. She urged the community to remain informed about earthquake preparedness measures.
"We ask the people of Santiago to educate themselves on what actions to take before, during, and after a quake," Johnson Urrutia stated.
As of 5:59 am on Monday, CENAIS had recorded a total of 885 seismic events, further illustrating the ongoing geological instability in the region.
