The eastern region of Cuba is on heightened alert following the detection of 1,799 aftershocks in the wake of significant earthquakes that struck Sunday morning. This alarming activity was reported by the National Seismological Service.

According to the latest update from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), these aftershocks occurred over the past 48 hours, encompassing the two major quakes measuring 6.0 and 6.7 that caused widespread damage. From 6:00 am Monday to 5:59 am Tuesday, 914 tremors were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 0.5 to 4.0, primarily affecting the Pilón-Chivirico area in the province of Granma.

Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, the First Secretary of the Party in Santiago de Cuba, shared on her Facebook page that out of the total aftershocks, 63 were potentially noticeable. She urged residents to remain vigilant regarding seismic activity.

"We ask the people of Santiago to stay informed about the necessary safety measures before, during, and after an earthquake," she emphasized.

As of 5:59 am Monday, CENAIS had already recorded 885 seismic events in the preceding 24 hours. The ongoing activity underscores the need for continued awareness and preparedness in the region.
