Cuban Woman in the U.S. Shocked by $170 Grocery Bill at Costco

Tuesday, November 12, 2024 by Samantha Mendoza

A Cuban woman living in the United States was taken aback by how much she spent on groceries at Costco. Through her TikTok account, @lafamiliatorres1, she shared the details of her shopping trip, leaving her followers astonished. "What is this, Tato? This is what $170 in groceries looks like," she exclaimed before listing the items she purchased: "bread, more bread, a lettuce, raspberries, grapes, three packs of strawberries, pickles, olives, salt, brown sugar that had run out, salad rolls, coffee, a bottle of Margarita mix, a rack of ribs, and a tray of churrasco." She also mentioned that her husband needed to buy "yucca and beer," adding with resignation, "There goes another $100, folks, this was $170, where are we headed?"

For her, shopping at places like Sam's Club or Costco is the best choice in these times: "I’d much rather shop at Sam's, Costco, and those places because you end up spending the same $170 on just a few items. I don't know about you," she concluded.

Community Reactions and Global Comparisons

The video quickly attracted comments from followers sharing their own experiences and frustrations with current grocery prices. "And don't even think about going to Publix, you’ll spend $250 without batting an eye," one user noted. Another from Spain was amazed: "With that money, I buy a month's worth of food in Spain," to which someone else responded, "Where? At Mercadona, it's 130 for 10 days. Tell me where, please!"

Others took the chance to compare their situations in different countries: "Here in France, it's 300 euros for a month’s worth of food"; "In Canada, it's even more expensive"; "In Germany, I won't even tell you, it's a horror!" Amidst the debate, some questioned whether the economic situation would improve anytime soon. "We're all in the same boat," summarized one user; another added, "Food prices are through the roof."

Not everyone was critical or resigned to the situation. Some joked, "It wasn’t that bad"; "It's cheap, come on." There were even comments about potential political changes improving the situation. "With Trump's return, you'll be able to fill two shopping carts for just $50," one person claimed, to which @lafamiliatorres1 replied, "Well, he’s the only one who did something."
