Explosion Rocks Cuatro Caminos Market in Havana, No Casualties Reported

Sunday, November 10, 2024 by Isabella Sanchez

An explosion occurred at Cuatro Caminos Market in Havana on Saturday afternoon, with no reported casualties. The incident took place around 1 PM, as indicated by a video released by the independent outlet CubaNet.

CubaNet posted a video on Facebook showing damage to the exterior corridor floor of the market. The outlet suggested that a malfunction in an underground transformer might have triggered the explosion.

A significant presence of police and fire brigade was noted at the scene, although there were no signs of a fire outbreak. Cuatro Caminos Market, renowned as one of the largest in the nation, was reopened in November 2019 following heavy government promotion. The reopening day was marked by chaos and damage caused by eager crowds.

The market was shut down the same day but reopened in January 2020 after what authorities from CIMEX described as "maintenance work, repairs, restocking, and inventory updates." During the COVID-19 pandemic, the market experienced several closures due to coronavirus outbreaks among its staff.
