Marrying an American? Colombian TikToker Highlights Surprising Downsides

Saturday, November 9, 2024 by Isabella Rojas

Valentina, a popular TikTok creator, has sparked a lively debate with her latest video on the "Downsides of Marrying an American." In her post, she outlines several scenarios that, in her opinion, could complicate life for a Latina choosing an American partner. The topics of reheated beans and the beloved show El Chavo del 8 stirred the most discussion.

For @valentinabuof, a major issue is that "you can't serve them the same meal three times," as Americans generally dislike leftovers and will discard uneaten restaurant food. "We'll have to cook even more, three different meals a day; it's exhausting, I can't handle it," she remarked. Furthermore, she laments their lack of familiarity with characters like Don Ramón, Doña Florinda, or Kiko, making it difficult to share those nostalgic cultural references.

Cultural Clashes: Communication and Daily Habits

The differences continue as the young Colombian notes that Americans prefer using Snapchat over WhatsApp for communication, often sending pictures "of their forehead, their knee," which seems nonsensical to her and many other Latinas. Another point Valentina raises is that in dangerous situations, telling them "don't give papaya" is pointless since they neither understand the fruit nor the saying, and by the time you explain, you're already in trouble.

The audience reacted with a mix of agreement and defense. Some confirmed the cultural gaps: "I totally agree about Snapchat, what a hassle!" "It's true, mine won't eat the same meal twice," and "Haha, my husband doesn't get my slang." However, others stood up for their American partners. One user noted, "There are Americans who eat leftovers and dislike Snapchat," while another added, "My husband eats all the leftovers in the fridge; I'm the one who doesn't eat reheated food."

Finding Humor in Cultural Differences

Several found humor and solutions to the issues Valentina brought up. "I'm in the U.S. and I can confirm the Snapchat thing LOL," a user wrote; "I've tried getting him to watch El Chavo with me, but it's impossible," someone else confessed. Others simply appreciated the comedic exaggeration: "Nothing like Latinos haha," "If there's leftover food, just freeze it," and "Sister, but long live the gringos!"

These types of videos contrasting Latin and American cultures not only entertain but also spark discussion and laughter. Meanwhile, Valentina continues to gather reactions, as many find the quirks she points out to be both relatable and a bit nostalgic.
