The mother of Abraham Daniel González Hernández, a 12-year-old boy who survived the floods triggered by Hurricane Oscar in San Antonio del Sur, Guantánamo, is still unaccounted for. Eight days post-disaster, the National Civil Defense Staff disclosed that two residents of the area remain missing: Kaliannis Hernández Urgelléz, 35, and Orlenis Gamboa Pérez, 42. Though the report from the state-run Granma newspaper did not specify, Kaliannis is confirmed to be young Daniel's mother through her Facebook profile.
The young boy is currently recovering at the Pediatric Provincial Hospital Pedro Agustín Pérez, following surgery on his left leg which had suffered a septic and necrotic wound. In previous interviews with the state media, he recounted that he was at home with his family when the floods began. This suggests that the other missing individual could be his stepfather.
"When I woke up, the water was already a foot deep and rising. We climbed up to the rafters. The house submerged, and I managed to get out, my family too, but I lost hold of my mom's hand. That was when I hit a coconut tree, clung to it, and managed to climb up, feeling the cold," Daniel shared at the time.
Currently, the boy remains hospitalized, receiving care from his grandmother as he continues his treatment.
