The charitable initiative "Breath of Life" has sent over 500 pounds of donations to Guantánamo, consisting of six suitcases each weighing more than 90 pounds. These were packed with clothes, shoes, sheets, towels, food, and hygiene products to support those affected by Hurricane Oscar. This initial shipment aims to provide relief to individuals who have lost everything in the storm's aftermath, shared Yankiel Fernández, the leader of the project, on Facebook.
Fernández emphasized that they have already started distributing the first wave of aid and are closely assessing the needs of those impacted. Although unable to be present, he mentioned that a delegation from his team traveled to Guantánamo to deliver the supplies and support families facing hardship.
The activist expressed that these efforts highlight the project's commitment to being present throughout Cuba and offering assistance to those most in need, in alignment with their philosophy of "leaving traces" and spreading Breath of Life across the nation. He also announced plans for collecting more donations for a second shipment in the coming days, expressing gratitude to all who contributed with money, clothing, food, medication, and hygiene products.
"In our project, we do not rest, we do not stop, and we certainly do not play games when it comes to helping people," Fernández stated, underscoring the significant needs of the hurricane victims and the vital nature of this humanitarian work.
Community and Celebrity Support
Responding to the call of activist Yamilka Laffita—known as Lara Crofs—for humanitarian aid, Fernández and "Breath of Life" have taken action to assist those affected by Hurricane Oscar in eastern Cuba. Fernández thanked everyone who supported the mission by providing donations and financial contributions for transportation and purchasing essential resources.
He also expressed appreciation to Lara Crofs for her initiative and ongoing support, as well as to followers and friends who have backed this cause for the common good. Many individuals and independent organizations both within Cuba and abroad have been offering aid to hurricane victims, as the storm left several communities isolated due to severe flooding in the country's eastern regions.
Among these efforts, the activists from the "Huellas" project launched a social media campaign last Tuesday to further support those affected. Cuban comedian Andy Vázquez, famous for his "Facundo" character on the show "Vivir del cuento," also extended a helping hand by calling on his followers to assist the hurricane victims.
"I'm here to ask for help from the community, from everyone willing to support our brothers in eastern Cuba who have lost everything. Those interested can contact me at 239-470-8181," the actor shared on Instagram.
