A Cuban resident in Miami faced arrest on Monday after allegedly attacking an elderly neighbor while the latter was seated at a bus stop, according to police reports.
A witness driving by the location on 930 SW 22nd Avenue observed a man punching and kicking a defenseless older gentleman at the bus stop. The driver exited his car to confront the perpetrator, who fled the scene upon being noticed, as detailed in the arrest report.
The eyewitness promptly contacted 911, leading to the capture and identification of the suspect as Yendry Sánchez, a 45-year-old Miami resident. Local media confirmed Sánchez's Cuban nationality.
The elderly victim, who sustained serious injuries to his forehead and lips, along with head contusions, received medical attention from the Miami Fire Department personnel. He was then transported to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital for further treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the victim's age or his current condition.
According to the Miami Police report, Sánchez resides in the same apartment complex as the victim. The elderly man told officers that prior to the assault at the bus stop, Sánchez had yelled at him in the building's entrance and kicked the main door, though no physical contact occurred at that time.
The attack unfolded as the senior citizen left the building and headed towards the bus stop, with Sánchez following him. Surveillance cameras captured the violent confrontation.
Sánchez has been charged with aggravated assault on a person over 65 and was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight (TGK) Correctional Center in Miami-Dade. He appeared in court on Tuesday.
In a related incident last September, another Cuban was arrested in Hialeah, accused of vehicle theft and assaulting an 87-year-old man in a Sedano's supermarket parking lot.
