The aftermath of Hurricane Oscar in Guantánamo has unveiled heart-wrenching stories that continue to emerge, such as the tragic tale of five-year-old Liz Anyi Elías Labañino and her mother, Iriannis Labañino Domínguez, who lost their lives in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur. A recent revelation sheds light on the circumstances surrounding their deaths and the drastic action allegedly taken by the husband and father of the deceased.
A video shared by a Facebook user known as Luis ViralInfluencer Suarez (later removed from his profile) captured the testimony of a local resident. The neighbor claimed that the husband of "Chicha" and father of Liz Anyi ended his life, unable to bear the grief and sorrow from losing his loved ones.
Luis ViralInfluencer Suarez, a Cuban from Guantánamo now living abroad, is visiting the island to assist those affected in the province, according to América TeVe. He has shared numerous videos featuring testimonials from affected residents, highlighting stories of resilience and community support.
One such testimony (now deleted) came from a young man who confirmed that Liz Anyi and her mother drowned in the floodwaters, a fact the authorities have not disclosed. Although the father survived the ordeal, he reportedly succumbed to the overwhelming tragedy and took his own life out of despair.
"I went to the hospital looking for my mom, and there was nobody. I found a friend crying, saying his wife and little girl had drowned: Chichi, from the Cueva del Humo. He told me the river kept rising, and she said she couldn't swim. They both drowned," recounted the young man.
The sorrowful account became even more tragic when the young man, interviewed by Luis ViralInfluencer Suarez, revealed that the father of Liz Anyi and husband of Chicha decided to take his own life. "He almost drowned himself... Then, two days later, he hanged himself. He couldn't bear the pain," the young man said.
The removal of the video from the Facebook profile casts a shadow over the Elías Labañino family's ordeal, about which the authorities have remained silent. This silence also extends to the other five deceased individuals whose identities have been revealed, although the circumstances of their deaths remain undisclosed.
In addition to the mother and her five-year-old daughter, Cuban authorities have identified the deceased as Francisco Colombia Matos (92 years old), Esmeraldo Noa Fiffe (82), Antolino Areas Domínguez (84), and Alexander Saben Matos (42). The identity of the seventh victim has not been disclosed at this time.
On social media, some users have criticized local authorities for failing to warn residents in hazardous areas. Additionally, there are numerous posts suggesting that the actual death toll may be higher than officially acknowledged.
