A tragic accident in Camagüey has left at least one woman dead and several others injured after a private vehicle, apparently used for passenger transport, veered off the road and overturned under mysterious circumstances. The incident took place near the town of La Rosalía, on the way to the beach, between Nuevitas and Camagüey. A witness shared a couple of photos taken from inside another vehicle in the Automobile Accidents in Cuba group, but the images offered limited details of the crash scene.
In the comments section of the post, witnesses identified the deceased as "Baby," a woman who, despite being rushed to the hospital, succumbed to her critical injuries. "Sadly, my colleague and friend was in that van and she is now in serious condition with multiple head injuries," one netizen reported before learning of his friend's passing.
Details about the accident remain scarce, and the exact number of injured individuals is unclear, though some internet users suggested there could be at least four seriously hurt. As of the close of this report, no further information is available.
Ongoing Traffic Crisis in Cuba
Traffic accidents have been relentless on Cuban roads throughout the year. In another recent incident, two teenagers were severely injured on the morning of October 27 in Havana when the rear of the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a Kia Picanto. The driver fled the scene after dragging them several meters.
This particular accident occurred on Boyeros Avenue, near the Río Cristal recreational center. The family of one of the injured is seeking assistance to identify the hit-and-run driver.
Despite the public perception of an increase in traffic accidents in recent months, Cuban authorities claimed in early July that the first half of 2024 saw 543 fewer incidents compared to the same period the previous year. During the official television program Mesa Redonda, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Special Traffic Unit of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), also reported 81 fewer fatalities (a 23% decrease) and a reduction of 151 injured individuals (5%) between January and June of this year compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
