A Cuban man was apprehended by Hialeah police on Sunday, facing charges of attempted murder after allegedly shooting his ex-wife multiple times at her Kendall residence following a dispute, authorities reported. The suspect, identified as Pedro Núñez, 47, admitted to arguing with his former partner and shooting her at least four times in the hallway of the house. According to the arrest report mentioned by El Nuevo Herald, the woman's body fell toward the door, causing it to open and she collapsed inside.
After the shooting, Núñez fled the scene and called his father to confess he had shot her, mistakenly believing she was dead, as detailed in a statement released Monday by the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD). Núñez and his victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, share a 10-year-old child.
Incident Details and Emergency Response
The incident unfolded early Sunday morning at a residence located on the 6200 block of Southwest 109th Avenue. Officers arrived shortly after 3:30 a.m. to find the woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Her injuries, located on her torso, limbs, and buttocks, were life-threatening. Emergency responders from Miami-Dade rushed her to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
While drifting in and out of consciousness, the victim managed to inform authorities that her ex-husband was the shooter, according to the report. She underwent surgery on Sunday and remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition, with another surgery scheduled for Monday.
Witness and Arrest
A tenant of the residence alerted authorities after arriving home around 3:34 a.m. to find the front door open. Upon opening the door to his rented efficiency, he noticed a significant amount of blood on the floor, prompting him to call 911 from the street.
While Miami-Dade officers were on the scene, the Hialeah Police Department reported that the suspect had surrendered to their jurisdiction and was in custody. Núñez also handed over the firearm used in the shooting. He was subsequently transferred to the Miami-Dade Police Department's specialized domestic violence unit, which is now handling the investigation.
Núñez was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade, facing a charge of attempted murder with a firearm. He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
