A Cuban woman, currently living in Mexico, has been turning the challenges of sharing a home with 11 others into content for her social media platforms. Through her posts, she highlights the obstacles she faces as she tries to navigate life in a new country.
The young woman, known as Yosme (@yosme956) on TikTok, recently posted a video capturing the everyday struggle of making breakfast in a crowded living space. "Every morning is a fresh start, so let me show you what mine looks like," she began in her video.
"I share the rent with 11 other people, and trust me, before I even brush my teeth, I have to rush to the stove to make breakfast or get a head start on cooking, otherwise I’ll have to wait my turn," she explained. Adding a touch of humor, she mentioned that because she and her husband are "good runners," they managed to secure one of the first spots: "While he cooked breakfast, I tidied up our small personal space."
Challenges of Cuban Migrants
She candidly described their living situation, saying, "It's not a princess's palace, full of luxuries, but I believe it has the basic necessities to live, at least from my perspective." Her narrative sheds light on the difficulties Cubans face when they choose to emigrate.
On a brighter note, she shared that the day was special because, after more than 15 days without it, they finally received a water supply: "Hearing 'the water is here' was music to my ears," she exclaimed.
Advice for Future Residents
In another video, Yosme offered advice to those considering living or just passing through Mexico, emphasizing that doing so illegally is not advisable. Drawing from her own experience, she stressed the importance of first registering with the COMAR (Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance).
After registration, one must wait for an email notification with an appointment at the COMAR office. "It's a long process, requiring patience, and you won't escape the long queues," she emphasized.
