A 59-year-old man was tragically killed early Saturday in Havana during a home invasion, as reported by the independent outlet Cubanet, citing a source close to the victim. The deceased, known as a babalawo, has been identified as José Ángel Regüeiferos Fontanal.
The incident took place near the intersection of Esquina de Tejas on Calzada del Cerro, in Havana. José Ángel was attempting to thwart intruders from stealing from his home when he was fatally stabbed by the assailants.
"They broke into his house to rob him; he confronted them, and they responded by stabbing him to death. Afterward, they took nearly everything from the house and left him covered with a sheet under the table," recounted Ibis Zamora, a close acquaintance of the victim, to the aforementioned source.
His body was discovered on the morning of Sunday, October 27th. Originally from the municipality of Songo La Maya in Santiago de Cuba, José Ángel had been residing in the capital for years, practicing as a babalawo.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the murderers have been apprehended by authorities or if they are still at large. Details about the stolen items have not been disclosed. Family members have urgently traveled to Havana to handle funeral arrangements and assist with the police investigation.
