Cuba's Civil Defense has issued a warning for the provinces of Guantánamo and Holguín as heavy rains threaten to cause significant flooding in the area. This comes as a trough affects the eastern region, combined with a tropical wave in the central Caribbean Sea and high humidity levels. The recent saturation of the soil from prior rainfall has already led to flooding in the municipalities of Baracoa in Guantánamo and Moa in Holguín.

In response, local authorities have activated the Municipal Defense Council in Moa to assist with the evacuation of residents from vulnerable areas. The public is urged to stay informed via updates from the Institute of Meteorology and Civil Defense.

Urgency in Evacuation Efforts

The situation is dire in the region, with reports of severe flooding in Baracoa and Cabacú. The Miel River and other waterways have overflowed, impacting homes and roads. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero has called on residents to heed evacuation orders and seek safe shelter.

According to the local media outlet Primada Visión, a staggering 128.8 mm of rain fell within just six hours, exacerbating conditions in communities such as La Playa and El Matadero. Frequent power outages have made it challenging for residents to access news and official guidance via radio and television, presenting an additional hurdle for affected families.

Continued Monitoring and Safety Measures

The Civil Defense, along with the institutes of Meteorology and Hydraulic Resources, is closely monitoring the situation. They emphasize the importance of following official instructions and adhering to safety measures to minimize the risk of human casualties and further damage. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for any necessary actions to protect themselves and their property.
