Prominent Cuban activist and economist Manuel Milanés has been honored in the U.S. Congressional Record for his bravery after he heroically saved a mother and her four children from a violent attack, during which he was shot. Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart introduced this commendation, highlighting Milanés' courage and selfless actions, as he took a bullet to the chest while trying to protect the family from danger.

"Our community is fortunate to have heroes like Manuel and dedicated first responders. Their actions inspire hope for America's future and demonstrate that humanity and solidarity still thrive," emphasized the Cuban-American congressman.

Incident in Collier County

The incident occurred on August 23rd, when Milanés heard cries for help near his home in Collier County. Upon investigating, he discovered an armed man attempting to break into a vehicle occupied by the woman and her children.

The situation intensified as the assailant, later identified as 26-year-old Hilberto Callejas, rammed his car into the woman's vehicle. He then exited his car, approached the victim's vehicle, and shattered a window with a firearm, according to local sheriff Kevin Rambosk.

A Heroic Intervention

Without hesitation, Milanés called the police and moved to defend the woman and children in the car, stepping between them and Callejas. At that moment, the assailant shot him. Thanks to the swift response of emergency services, Milanés was rushed to the hospital and fully recovered.

Recognition and Community Support

In addition to the Congressional recognition, Milanés recently received the Sheriff's Appreciation Award from the Collier County Police in South Florida. Sheriff Kevin J. Rambosk expressed his gratitude for the Cuban dissident's bravery, noting that his actions exemplified heroism and altruism.

"Thank you for dedicating and risking your life to protect our community," the sheriff stated during the award ceremony.

The Cuban community in southern Florida closely followed Milanés' situation, applauding his heroic act as a testament to the solidarity and humanity characteristic of Cubans.

The attacker, identified as Hilberto Callejas, faces numerous charges for his violent actions, including aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated assault, firing into an occupied vehicle, and child abuse, among others.
