In a shocking incident, Tamara Carreras Martínez, aged 57, was brutally murdered in the streets of Santiago de Cuba by her partner this past Thursday. This horrifying event was reported by journalist Yosmany Mayeta. Tamara was an employee in the Informatization department at the University of Oriente. The university issued a brief statement of condolence, omitting details of the cause of death.
"The university community mourns the unfortunate passing of our colleague Tamara Carrera Martínez at the age of 57, a valued member of our Informatization Directorate," the educational institution expressed on its social media platform. "Such news brings deep sorrow and sadness. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and loved ones," the statement further added.
According to Mayeta Labrada, the attacker was confronted and beaten by local residents who witnessed the assault. Images circulated online showed the assailant, whose name has not been disclosed, being transported to a hospital. His current health condition remains unknown.
Tamara had been living on San Antonio Street, between Barnada and San Agustín, and was only weeks away from her 58th birthday in November. A local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed that she had been enduring abuse. "Her husband was quite toxic and oppressive," the neighbor remarked.
Family and Community Reactions
The victim is survived by her son, Ariel Despaigne Carreras, who, as reported by the same neighbor, was "out of the country," likely journeying through Central America in search of a new life. From abroad, Ariel expressed his anguish upon learning of his mother's tragic fate. "Finding out from afar hurts," he wrote in response to Mayeta's post, while also extending gratitude to the many users who expressed their condolences publicly. "Thank you so much to my neighbors and family for their unwavering support," he expressed in another message.
This marks the second known femicide in Santiago de Cuba this month. Just days ago, the death of Yucleidis Morales was confirmed in Baltony, within the Los Reynaldo community in Songo-La Maya.
