The U.S. Embassy in Havana has announced that, due to ongoing power outages and the suspension of non-essential activities in Cuba, its Consular Section will only be open for emergency services on October 24 and 25. All routine services, including appointments for immigrant and non-immigrant visas, document reviews, the CFRP (Cuban Family Reunification Parole) program, as well as services for refugees and family members of asylees, have been postponed. Applicants will receive updates directly, so there is no need to contact the embassy.
Applicants who have confirmed their immigrant visa issuance on the CEAC site can collect them during regular hours. In case of emergencies, U.S. citizens can email ACSHavana@state.gov or call +(53) (7) 839-4100. After hours, they should press 1 followed by 0. For visa inquiries, contact visasHavana@state.gov.
Precautionary Measures for U.S. Citizens in Cuba
The U.S. Embassy in Havana has reiterated its advice for American citizens in Cuba to take precautions, such as staying informed via local media, stocking up on water and food, keeping mobile phones charged, reviewing contingency plans, and maintaining regular contact with family and friends. Previously, on Monday, October 20, the embassy had already suspended all services due to a widespread collapse of the electrical system in the country and had announced its availability for emergency cases.
Cuban Government Extends Suspension of Classes and Work Activities
The Cuban government announced on Wednesday, October 23, that the suspension of classes and work activities would be extended until October 27. This decision is attributed to the ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Oscar and the restoration of the National Electric System (SEN). "To continue the recovery efforts from the damage caused by Hurricane Oscar in the eastern region of the country and the restoration of the National Electric System, the National Defense Council has decided to extend until Sunday, October 27, the measures adopted by the Government, published last October 20, 2024, regarding work and educational activities," reported official media.
The announcement also confirmed that "workers mobilized under these circumstances will continue to receive their average salary, while those unable to attend work due to the suspension will receive a salary guarantee equivalent to the scale salary of their position."
