A young Cuban boy, identified as Daniel González Hernández, aged 12, was saved from the intense flooding caused by Hurricane Oscar in San Antonio del Sur, a municipality in Guantánamo. The official profile "Idolkis Arguelles Berdón" reported that at least seven people have died in the area due to the disaster.
After his rescue by members of the Municipal Defense Council, González Hernández was admitted to the Pedro Agustín Pérez Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Guantánamo. The flooding had left the region isolated following the hurricane's impact on October 20th. Residing in Macambo, the boy sustained a severe leg injury, and a successful necrotomy was performed. This medical procedure was crucial to remove dead tissue and prevent infections that could lead to permanent deformities, as the report indicated.
Devastation in Baracoa
The situation in Guantánamo remains dire. In Baracoa, an emergency unfolded yesterday when a critically ill child had to be airlifted to a hospital outside the locality. Torrential floods and infrastructure damage have left this eastern Cuban town nearly cut off, especially after the collapse of La Farola viaduct, which connects the city to the rest of the province.
Loss of Lives and Property
Cuban authorities have confirmed the tragic loss of at least seven lives during Hurricane Oscar's passage. Victims include three elderly individuals and a five-year-old girl. The government has reported that over a thousand homes have suffered severe damage across several municipalities, with the hardest-hit areas being Baracoa, Imías, and Maisí.
Efforts are ongoing to restore electricity and communication in the most affected regions, while the community rallies together to support the victims of this natural disaster.
