Cuban actress Judith González, best known for her role as "Magdalena la Pelúa," released an emotional video from Miami, expressing her anguish over the severe crisis facing Cuba. Following a massive blackout that began on October 18 and the devastation caused by Hurricane Oscar, González conveyed her solidarity with the Cuban people while openly criticizing the government.
"I have to speak out about what's happening in Cuba. I genuinely want to stand with my country during this crisis," Judith began, her voice choked with emotion and tears in her eyes. "The situation in Cuba is truly dire. People are without food, water, electricity, and the worst part is that hope diminishes with each passing day," she continued, highlighting the despair of Cubans and the government's failure to provide solutions.
A Call for Change Amidst Crisis
With a pointed critique of the regime, Judith stated, "They've ruined everything, allowed every system to wither away. Now they don't even have a solution to fix this mess, and yet they ask the people for patience? Don't talk to me about images, showing people dancing. No! The Cuban people are suffering immensely."
She also voiced the frustration felt by the Cuban diaspora who watch helplessly from afar. "Those inside and us outside, we're overwhelmed with powerlessness. If you can't fix it, take your plane and get out, please," she urged passionately, directing her words to the country's leaders.
Voices of the Cuban People
Judith's message has struck a chord with hundreds of Cubans, both on the island and abroad, reflecting the frustration and pain of those closely experiencing the crisis. "Cuba is like a concentration camp," one commenter noted, while another added, "It's incredibly sad; may God have mercy on that nation." Calls for change were prevalent, with another user declaring, "Down with the dictatorship. Freedom for my Cuba."
Many expressed the agony of being unable to reach loved ones due to the collapse of communications in Cuba. "I've been trying to call my entire family, and all the phones are off. I haven't spoken a single word with my parents. This is deeply painful and utterly frustrating," shared one individual.
Protests Ignite Amid Blackout
Since October 18, Cuba has been plunged into darkness affecting millions, worsened by Hurricane Oscar's impact in the eastern region. In response, Cubans have taken to the streets in various locations, including Havana, to protest with pots and pans and cries of desperation.
Judith concluded her message with a blend of hope and disappointment, reflecting on the numerous videos she's made regarding Cuba's situation. "How many times have I recorded videos for Cuba, and then when the power returns, everyone forgets! But I'm leaving this video up because what is happening is truly heartbreaking," she stated.
In the description of her post, Judith wrote, "I pray to God with all my soul for an opportunity to save our country once and for all. #DownWithTheCubanDictatorship. God bless Cuba."
